An Evil Thing And Bitter

Jeremiah 2:19: Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.

The evil and bitter thing is forsaking the Lord, leaving Him out of our thoughts and excluding Him from our lives. Unbelievers forsake Him 24/7 and the fleshly nature of believers prefers to forsake Him too. Forsaking Him is obviously a sin.

Hymn-writer Robert Robinson understood that this truth applied to him. Read his prayer in his hymn: Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing:

Let Thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to Thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here*s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above.

If we are wise believers we too will recognize this evil and the bitterness it causes, ask God*s help as Mr. Robinson did and fight tooth and nail against forsaking Him. So how do we forsake the God we love? We do not think about Him. We forget about Him. We do not always seek His presence and His counsel. We do not speak to Him in prayer. We do not read His book, the Bible. We quench and grieve His Holy Spirit. And we do not always obey Him. He is the wisest and most loving being there is. Forsaking Him is not only evil and bitter, it is incredibly foolish. He will have our full attention in Heaven. The wiser we are, the more of our attention we will give Him here and now. That way we can make our lives on earth sweeter and a little more Heavenly. We can get some of the bitterness out of our lives.
